I was highly offended by a co-worker at my freelance job last night. A conversation on Octo-mom turned into her spouting off about how if you can't have kids the natural way, you shouldn't have them at all because that's what nature is telling you. Also, she started on some theory about how in the future, all of these kids conceived with the help of fertility drugs will have major problems that we don't know about yet because they're not supposed to be born in the first place.
She has no idea that we're trying, not to mention having problems, so after turning eight shades of fury purple, I mumbled something about disagreeing and walked away. I didn't talk to her for the rest of the night but today, I couldn't stop wondering -- do people actually think this way or is she just an ignorant idiot?

ReplyDeleteI think people do think this way, I know I've heard it before. I think there's a breakdown of the assumptions (but I don't ask for specifics because I don't want to know what they think).
ReplyDeleteIf there's one thing having a real job and not being in school any more has taught me, it's that you don't say potentially wildly offensive things around people you don't know well enough that you know they agree - or they can come right back at you. IF has cemented that lesson, but I think it's one every grown-up should have learned anyway: don't annoy others. Sigh.
